What to look for when purchasing your first family carSo you recently joined the ranks of couples who can now say, “you and me and baby makes three.” Or maybe that cute little compact car with two car seats in the back won’t cut it now that a new little one is on the way. Plus, there are diaper bags to lug and toys and little nooks needed to store massive amounts of baby wipes. Because Bachman Chevrolet understands those life transitions, we want to share some important things to look for when shopping for that first family car.

Safety

First on the list, of course, is the search for the safest vehicle for your family. Even though wise money stewards seek to save money on most every purchase, skimping on safety features when it comes to your vehicle, especially when you have little ones, is not a smart choice. That rock-bottom priced vehicle you saw on a flyer in the grocery is probably not your best bet. Look for vehicles with high safety ratings, which probably means they also have airbags, anti-lock brakes, and the LATCH system for car seats. New cars are usually given a crash test safety rating. Click here to search by make and model to see what rating different vehicles have received.

Space

Since you’ve decided it’s time to “up-size” now is the time to be sure your new vehicle has enough space to contain all of your travel gear. If you make an overnight trip to Grandma’s will your cargo area house your playpen, portable high chair, and jumbo box of diapers? Give yourselves a little breathing room so that things aren’t still crammed in and overflowing.

Seating

Growing families need to consider how accessible the car seat area is. After all, you are going to be connecting and disconnecting car seats countless times. Make sure you choose a vehicle that makes the process as simple as possible. And don’t be afraid to bring your car seat base to the dealership with you to see if it’s easy to anchor in. You also need to consider how accessible seating is for children who are more mobile and will need to get into the seats themselves. Do they have to pull down the front seat or step on the back of your seat to get to theirs? Consider ease of traveling and seating comfort when shopping around.

Gas

Even if you live in a community that is convenient to most everything, as a parent you are going to spend a lot of time in the car heading to pediatrician appointments, play dates, and baseball practice. More driving means more money spent on gas. Chevrolet has 12 models that offer 30 MPG HWY or better, including the Malibu, Cruze, and Equinox.
